Energy Conservation

Energy Conservation can be defined as the concept of saving energy by optimizing the use of energy or using it efficiently. Energy Conservation technique can be used to lower environmental hazards and higher money savings. Energy to be conserved can be of any form. Some common ways by which the Energy is wasted on the daily basis is when the devices not in use such as Dish Washers, Washing Machines, Computers, Televisions, Mobile Chargers, Electric Heaters or any other appliances and electronic gadgets are kept on standby mode. Even though the systems are not consuming the whole power but they can still consume up to 50% of the total power. Here we are concerned with electrical energy and to avoid the leakage and optimizing the energy usage following measures can be very handy:

  • Shaded trees should be planted & paint houses of a light color if living in a warm climate, or a dark color if in a cold climate. This minimizes the use of electric heater and minimizes the need for the cooling appliances.
  • While using air filters clean or replace it as recommended. Energy leakage can be found when air conditioners or hot-air furnaces need to work harder to draw air through dirty filters.
  • Temperature controls should be adjusted to reduce overheating or overcooling and use natural ventilation more efficiently. During summers, Thermostat should be kept at 25°C and during winters, kept at 20°C. Wear a sweater or long-sleeved shirt if you need extra warmth.
  • Regular service should be insured of air conditioners and heaters once per season.
  • Install a programmable thermostat. This can help to reduce heaters and air conditioners utility cost as much as 10% since you can conserve energy when not in use.
  • Use washing machines at warm or cold-water setting rather than at hot as this may results in extra energy consumption.
  • By keeping refrigerators ice free the less energy or less power would require by the refrigerators to work.
  • Set refrigerators temperature to 2.7oC and freezer at -16oC for conservative use.
  • Use maximum sunlight for illumination purpose in day.
  • Use LED bulbs instead of greater wattage light bulbs or florescent lights.
  • Turn off lights, Televisions and Computers when they are not in use.
  • Install proper insulations thus less need for heaters and less energy consumption.
